PriceWaterhouseCoopers Meets with GAME Australia Creditors Next Week

The Australian arm of UK games retailer GAME made headlines on Monday when it told customers that it couldn’t honor its pre-orders for Diablo III. As one might imagine, this was not great for the company's reputation amongst customers, but luckily Blizzard stepped in and saved the day. U.S. State Department: A Circular 175 Memorandum for ACTA Was Never Issued

In February the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) submitted a Freedom of Information Act Request to the State Department asking them to release documents related to the department's review of ACTA. The State Department is required to prepare a "Circular 175 Memorandum," whenever an international treaty is going to be negotiated. According to the EFF's Gwen Hinze, the Circular 175 is required "for all treaties and other international instruments that bind the United States as a matter of international law under 22 CFR Part 181. Origin Offers Free Distribution for Crowdfunded Games

Everyone is getting in on the crowdfunding bandwagon. Electronic Arts announced today that it will make life a little bit easier for anyone that successfully funds a game through a crowdfunding program such as Kickstarter by letting them sell their game on its Origin digital distribution platform for free for 90 days. While 90 days might not seem like a very long time let's keep in mind that the best sales usually come in the first two weeks of a game's release anyway...

Comcast To Test New Pricing Tiers for Broadband Users, Temporarily Suspend Caps in Some Areas

Comcast says that it will soon raise the monthly cap of 250GB that customers currently suffer under to 300GB as part of a new tiered pricing plan, according to a CNET report. While it will beta test this new tired pricing model in some areas, the good news is that in areas where it is not testing it the data caps will be temporarily lifted.

Woman Sues Capcom Japan for Work-Place Bullying

A Japanese game developer who worked on Dragon's Dogma at Capcom is claiming that she was bullied by her fellow employees to the point where she considered committing suicide. According to an article on Japanese publication Minpokyo, the unnamed 20+ year old female joined Capcom in 2009 and was assigned to the Dragon's Dogma development team. But the trouble began when a senior female employee was assigned to the team too. According to the report, she decided to make it very unpleasant for the unnamed employee.

Japan Bans 'Complete Gacha' Mechanics in Games

The government of Japan has decided that it needs to ban 'complete gacha' mechanics in video games, particularly those used by companies like Namco Bandai, Gree and DeNa. Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency will ban 'complete gacha' mechanics because they see it as encouraging the addictive nature of gambling.

HMV and Microsoft raise Big Money for UK Cancer Charity

UK retailer HMV and Microsoft managed to raise over £19,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust as part of a 5-aside Soccer Challenge at Wembley. Koch Media, Warner Bros, and The Guardian also had teams involved in the competition that ultimately benefited charity, but Sony Music ultimately ended up winning the overall tournament.

More 38 Studios Woes

Things are going from bad to worse for 38 Studios and its employees. On Thursday a company representative hand-delivered a check for the $1.1 million payment that was due on May 1 to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, but the company then said that it didn't have the money in the bank to cover the check. If a private citizen wrote such a check they would be under arrest and enjoying the amenities of a Rhode Island jail without bail, but that's another story altogether. Read more

Facebook IPO Puts Stock at $38 a Share

The world's largest social network has set the price per share of its initial public offering at $38 a share. The stock is listed on NASDAQ today and there are 421.2 million shares available (180 million in new stock, and the rest with existing stockholders). If Facebook sells all of those shares at that price, the company could raise an estimated $16 billion and have a valuation of $104 billion.

Rhode Island Would Own 38 Studios' IP if it Defaults on Loan

Residents of Rhode Island can take solace in the fact that if 38 Studios were to fail today it would own the rights to the studios' current and future intellectual properties: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and its MMO "Project Copernicus." All future revenues from both titles would also go towards paying down the debt too - you know, the $75 million bond plus the interest through 2020.
